Kite Surfing

A heaven for an adrenaline junkie, kite-surfing is just the perfect way to indulge in Sri Lanka. And Kalpitiya is the best place for it. Get strapped to a giant kite, dragged on a surfboard over the sea and fly by the wind. Sounds complicated? But it can easily be done after a training of 3 days.

Major destinations in Sri Lanka for kite-surfing are Vellai Island, Mannar, Puttalam, Kappalady and Kalpitiya. Kitesurfing season runs from the middle of May till the end of September. This is the time when winds are the strongest and also reliable.

KalpitiyaThe beautiful lagoon has the biggest and most established kite surfing sites in entire Sri Lanka. It is full of flat water which is ideal for beginners and freestyle riders. During summers, the wind in Kalpitiya goes southwest, crosses the land, before reaching the lagoon. In winters, it blows in the northwest direction towards the sea which is much steady.

KappaladyIf you don’t prefer a crowded space, then Kappalady is a quieter version of the Kalpitiya beach. This tiny lagoon, full of palm trees has water that is waist deep throughout. Reef here is less than 100 meters offshore and the wind blows towards Kappalady during the high season. During winters, the direction of the wind changes and blows towards the land.

PuttalamPuttalam lagoon on the south of Dutch Bay is full of small islands, sandbars and crowds of kite boarders. Since, it is also a fishing zone; Kitesurfing should be done with proper guidance.

Vella IslandOne of the most beautiful kitesurfing spots, the small island is nestled in the mid of the waters in the north of Kalpitiya. To launch your kites, take a boat ride from Kalpitiya to Vella Island. The wind is quite stable here, hence making it a popular spot for kite surfing. Hammocks and tents are available in Kalpitiya for such activities.

MannarButter flat lagoons, crystal clear water and squeaky sand beaches; yes that is Mannar, a kite boarder’s heaven. The water here is so clear that one can clearly see the rock formations that lie beneath. Nearby schools and resorts offer Kiting classes and also packages.

Colombo, Negombo, Arugam Bay, Weligama, Unawatuna, Galle, and Hikkaduwa are also popular places for Kite Surfing.
