


Sinhala & Tamil Nadu New Year Festival commemorates Aluth Avurudda, which marks the end of agricultural harvest period. This New Year Festival lasts for seven days and many religious ceremonies take place during that time. It begins with Nonagathe that involves a visit to the temples for religious ceremonies. Next, rabana drums are played by the women of village. Homes are decorated with lights and new clothes are worn. Many domestic rituals are performed like lighting fire, making kiri milk rice and meeting the relatives and exchange sweets. This festival is celebrated equally by Sinhalese Buddhists and Tamil Hindus of Sri Lanka. From old to young, everyone is seen on the streets.
